Power of Social Media: Jason Calacanis vs Keiretsu

I enjoy watching This Week in Start Up (TWIST) with Jason Calacanis. I
know, I know some people call him a troll and he does have a tendency
stir up ... controversy. However in his latest "jihad" (Jason's
description, not mine), he has decided to take on so called “angel”
groups who charge startups to present to them. In my earlier
incarnation we dealt with such groups and I never liked them, always
thought they would take an arm and both legs and then charge you for
the wheelchair.

Anyway in episode TWiST #23 – Angel Funding Showdown (chk out
http://thisweekinstartups.com/2009/10/twist-episode-23-angel-funding-showdown/)
Jason took on Steve Bell, a member of the Keiretsu Forum. Watch the
episode, you won't regret it.

Jason used social media and more important, his influence, and the
good will he has built up over the years to take them head on. I don't
mind telling you that I cringed each time he challenged them, but look
at the results, Keiretsu has announced that they will be lowering or
removing some of their fees. Check out Silicon Insider -

Happy reading.

Monitor Lizard @Wetlands Reserve

(download)

Saw this guy as I walked into the Wetlands Reserve. There were two
others but this guys was the closest. Think he must have measured
slightly more than 2m in length. Thats why I like cameras with 10x
zoom.

Kodak in serious decline - but they make a good camera

I've known for a while that Kodak was cutting back on their services
in Singapore but I realized the extent until last week.

I have a great Kodak digital camera. Been with me for about 5 years
and I've taken great shots with it all over the region.

Recently I was in Cameron Highlands, on the Boh Tea Estate. I took my
camera out from its case, turn it on and watched in horror as it
slipped out of my fingers. It landed with a loud thud and and I saw
the pieces flying from the shatters lens frame.

Needless to say I was sad, but we were on holiday and life goes on.

I returned to Singapore, was busy at work but I decided to take leave
one day to fix the camera. I went online to check for Kodak's service
centre in SIngapore. I typed in Kodak.com.sg and it brought me to
kodak.com. Ok, not a problem. I'll click on the Country Selector. I
did and I got options for Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, New
Zealand, Thailand. No Singapore.

Ok, I'll Google Kodak Singapore. I got a map and an address and a
telephone number. Problem solved - yeah right. Number led to automated
hell. Threw me into a loop and when I finally got someone they told me
that I needed to call Kodak Singapore and proceeded to give me the
exact number I had called initially. My wife thought it was just me so
I gave her the number. It led to the same painful path.

SO I said, forget the number, I'll drive down and get the camera
fixed. The building is like a maze and the multi-story carpark had no
lots near Lobby 1 at all. After much walking, went up to the 5th flr
and was faced with a corridor of locked doors. I was so overwhlemed
with frustration I wanted to scream. Then I saw a woman stepping out
of the wash room and the only thing I can could say was, "I just want
to get my camera fixed".

She must have seen the look of frustration on my face and she said,
"Wait a minute" and went through one of the secured doors. Within a
minute a Malay guy came out and very apologetically explained that the
service centre was not in the building. Ha, ha. He gave me the address
of the service agent and adviced me to call. He then gave me detailed
instructions to the service centre.

I went to the Service Centre - a small room in an industrial park with
2 technicians. The lady looked at it and warned me that they may not
be able to fix it but let have some time to look at it. I did and true
to her words she called me the next day to give me the good news -
they could fix it and it wouldn't cost me an arm or a leg. I haven't
pick it up yet so I don't know if they did a good job.

I have bought 3 digital cameras since my daughter was born. I am
shopping for the next one but you can be sure it is not going to be a
Kodak.

The iPod Touch Versus Netbook Debate is Settled

I started off blogging on Posterous with a question about whether I
should get an iPod Touch or a Netbook. I think at that time I went
firmly with the decision that the iPod Touch would not be something I
would use because I need a device to read my eBooks (mainly .lit and
.pdf), and do my eBanking. I waffled around a bit and did a follow up
blof where I essentially came to the same conclusion, but I still had
not acted.

What stopped me was the fact that I've seen people reading on their
netbooks in the train and well, they look kinda dorky. I finally
decided to do some serious research early this year, I did a
side-by-side comparison of the major netbooks. I went down and
actually tried using a couple of them and it was terrible. Why would I
want to use an under-powered laptop that couldn't run most of the
applications that I really use - games. The experience of typing on
the keyboard and reading off the small screen just put me off. If it
were a tablet then I would consider, but tablets are still expensive
and under-powered.

So I decided to take another look at the iPod Touch. For some
inexpensive apps, I can transfer files from my desktop to the iPod
Touch and begin reading my PDFs. I can download Stanza and read my
collection of .lit files that I had accumulated over the years. Sure I
can't do my eBanking and I can't go to Flash sites but I'm actually
enjoying the device. There are some small irritations, like I can't
copy and paste which makes doing research a pain. I can't open
multiple apps, but without copy and paste, why would I need to anyway.
Still I can live with those irritations. The only major issue I have
is that Battery life sucks with WiFi on.

Apple is on the right track, and I look forward to my next acquisition
which I expect will be more powerful, capable of running flash and
java sites, and allow cut and paste.

Coming Full Circle

About 10 years ago during the Dot Com Bust, I recall giving a talk to
the department and I told them the story of the Lion and the Gazelle;

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run
faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.

Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest
gazelle or it will starve to death.

The moral:

It doesn't matter if you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes
up, you better be running.

10 years on, as I hear more doom and gloom stories, I cannot help but
recall the story and the need to share with another generation of
workers.

My thoughts on the Killing of the Singapore Hostage in Mumbai

I had followed  the attacks in Mumbai via Twitter but read about the killing of the Singaporean hostage in the news. Recently the Indian government released the transcripts of the terrorists calls with their handlers who are "alleged" to have been in Pakistan.

Here are the excerpts, you can read the full article at: http://tnp.sg/news/story/0,4136,189152,00.html?

GUNMAN 1: 'We are on the 10th/11th floor. We have five hostages.'

HANDLER 2: Everything is being recorded by the media. Inflict the maximum damage. Keep fighting. Don't be taken alive.

HANDLER 1: Kill all hostages, except the two Muslims. Keep your phone switched on so that we can hear the gunfire.

GUNMAN 2: We have three foreigners, including women. From Singapore and China.

HANDLER 1: Kill them.

The dossier then notes that the telephone intercept records the 'voices of (the gunmen) directing hostages to stand in a line, and telling two Muslims to stand aside. Sound of gunfire. Cheering voices in background.

The killing was deliberate, The hostages were non-combattants. I thought that the Prophet prohibited the killing of the "old verging on death, women, children and babes". At least this was what I read in http://www.muhajabah.com/reallysays.htm.

"Set out for Jihad in the name of Allah and for the sake of Allah. Do not lay hands on the old verging on death, on women, children and babes. Do not steal anything from the booty and collect together all that falls to your lot in the battlefield and do good, for Allah loves the virtuous and the pious."

I wonder if the terrorist had even known the Words of his prophet or was his knowledge of Islam dumped down upon him by men with their own agenda. There is a great need for everyone who profess a faith in God to read the teachings for themselves.

I see such blind following even amongst people who call themselves Christians yet follow beliefs that are unChristian. I can't speak for other faiths but as Christians we must remember that God has given us a brain, and He has given us His Words and most important, he has given us a relationship with Him. We are His children, He loves us so much He sent His Son, Jesus to take our place. Is it so difficult to pick up His Words and ponder on them and to seek to know Him? This are times of many false teachers who speaks well and promises much, but we must know God's truth for ourselves or we run the risk of following a David Koresh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Koresh) or his likes.

Just as I said about the mob killings of Christians, I say again, "The stupid are being led by the evil." It is not about Islam, ot Hinduism, or Judaism or Christianisty or any other religion.

Know the truth for yourself.

What did Jesus say about the End of Days?

Recently a long time Christian friend of mine was deep in thought and then he said, these are the signs of the End of Days and he pointed out the various wars, natural disasters and proliferation of false teachers.

Really? I asked. Where does it say that. Matthew 24 was the reply. Check out http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2024&version=9;. Yes, Jesus does talk about wars, natural disaster and false prophets but he also says in Matthew 24:36, "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." Sounds to me like Jesus says even He does not know when the End of Days will come. However, like many of us, the disciples too were not satisfied with the answer. We need to know when. After Jesus' resurrection, the disciples asked him "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" (Acts 1:6). Again, Jesus told them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority" (verse 7).

If Jesus tells us it is not for us to know then why go proclaiming that the End of Days is coming? Does it really matter when the End of Days will come? Jesus says, "Keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.... So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him" (24:42, 44). What does it matter when the End of Days will come if we live with our eyes and heart focused on God's Word.
